HOLLISTER, CA – A classic 1953 Chevrolet Bel Air was reported stolen from a residential driveway on Line St. on the morning of Friday, March 13, 2026. The vehicle was actively listed for sale on Facebook Marketplace at the time of the theft.
The owner moved the vehicle from the garage to the driveway at 7:30 AM for public display. The theft occurred during a narrow window between 8:30 AM and 9:45 AM while the owner was briefly away. No broken glass or signs of forced entry were found at the scene.
Investigative Analysis: The “For Sale” Target
Classic cars listed on public platforms like Facebook Marketplace are frequent targets for “scout” thieves. By providing the general location or identifiable neighborhood landmarks in a listing, sellers inadvertently give professional thieves a roadmap to the vehicle’s location. In this case, the lack of forced entry suggests the suspects may have used specialized tools to bypass vintage locks or utilized a flatbed trailer to remove the car quickly and quietly.
History: The 1953 Bel Air
1953 was a landmark year for the Bel Air, as it transitioned from a trim level to its own distinct premium model line. This year introduced the “Powerglide” automatic transmission and the iconic wrap-around windshield. Because of their classic lines and chrome-heavy aesthetic, these vehicles remain highly sought after by collectors and for export, making them high-priority targets for organized theft rings.
Security Spotlight: Protecting Your “For Sale” Vehicle
Selling a classic car requires extra vigilance. To protect your investment:
- Vetting Buyers: Never provide your exact home address until you have spoken to a potential buyer on the phone and verified their identity.
- Public Meetings: When possible, show the vehicle in a well-lit, highly trafficked public area with surveillance cameras rather than your home driveway.
- Temporary Trackers: If a vehicle is being moved to a driveway for display, ensure a hidden GPS tracker is active in the event of a “scout and grab” theft.
